Lion Air: the essential airline guide

Lion Air info

PT Lion Mentari Airlines, operating as Lion Air, is the Indonesian's largest private airline, owned by Rusdi Kirana and family. Founded in 1999, it begun operating in July 2000 with a single route, Jakarta to Pontianak. It has since grown to be Indonesia's largest domestic carrier - partly due to its aggressive, but flexible pricing structures which win over bargain hunters (for each flight Lion Air has 12 classes of ticket, and its system ensures that no flight runs at a loss).

Today Lion Air fleet has 60 planes in operation (mostly Boeing 737-900ER, Boeing 737-300,400 and Boeing MD-90). In November 2011 Lion Air ordered 230 new planes from Boeing, making it the largest commercial airplane order ever in Boeing's history. Lion Air's fleet does 3300 flights a week, both domestic and international; in 2011 it carried 27 million passengers.

Business Class

Lion Air’s Business Class offers more room in the cabin as well as personalised service and a higher level of privacy. The leather seats are more comfortable (spacious leg room of 38”), passengers can also enjoy in-flight dining - an option which is available in Economy Class only on long, international flights. Business Class customers have also access to a private lounge.

Lion Air vs Wings Air

Both Lion Air and Wings Air are part of one group/corporation. They work together like another Indonesian carrier - Garuda Indonesia and their budget wing Citilink, or Singapore Airlines and Silk Air in Singapore. However, unlike Garuda Indonesia/Citilink or Singapore Airlines/Silk Air, Lion Air/Wings Air continue to use the same website, airline code and booking system.

Although their levels of service are mostly the same, there are small differences:

You can easily tell which flight is operated by which airline by looking at the logo next to the flight details. Also, a four-digit flight number usually indicates a Wings Air flight.
